on notice

Last time I got a haircut, Luke didn't notice. I think he felt bad for not noticing when other people commented on it. So, knowing that I had a salon appointment this afternoon, he was determined to notice the minute he saw me.

"Your hair looks really nice!"

"Um, thanks. But I'm wearing my bike helmet."

I took it off and revealed my freshly-cut hair.

"Oh, I thought you were getting your hair cut today."

He sounded disappointed.

"No," I lied. "I changed my appointment to next week."
